Introduction

Recent years have seen a series of high-profile coroner’s inquests making the headlines nationally and last year was no different with the Croydon tram disaster and Fishmongers’ Hall inquests taking place amongst others.

On a wider level, inquests have continued to throw up challenging issues for interested persons including the bereaved, other individuals, private and public organisations involved. In particular, organisations risk reputational damage and the prospect of negative reports by coroners to prevent further deaths in accordance with regulation 28 of the Coroners (Investigation) Regulations 2013.

This webinar will explore key developments taking place in 2022 and what those involved in inquests should look out for.

The webinar is aimed at legal professionals already conducting inquest work, but it will also be of general interest to those who are new to this area and others keen to refresh their knowledge.

What You Will Learn

This APIL accredited webinar will cover the following:

  • Continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on coroner’s inquests; a practitioner’s eye view
  • Changes in legislation and procedure (including to Form 2)
  • Case law update
  • New competencies for lawyers practising in the Coroners’ Courts published by the SRA, BSB and CILEx Regulation
  • Calls for legal ‘equality of arms’ so bereaved persons have an automatic right to public funding for legal representation
