Introduction

Houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) present particular challenges for planning authorities.

High concentrations of HMOs and ‘studentification’ can result in substantial changes to neighbourhoods and a number of local authorities have sought to control the spread of HMOs through planning policy and other mechanisms.

This virtual classroom seminar will consider the planning issues associated with HMOs, including how they may be regulated by withdrawing permitted development rights, how planning and licensing powers relate to each other and what guidance is provided by recent court decisions.

What You Will Learn

This live and interactive session will cover the following:

  • What constitutes HMOs and small HMOs for planning purposes
  • Policy approaches to regulating HMOs
  • HMO licensing and planning
  • The use of powers to withdraw permitted development rights for HMOs
  • Case law update on HMOs

Recording of live sessions: Soon after the Learn Live session has taken place you will be able to go back and access the recording - should you wish to revisit the material discussed.
